Ok, after five days, thirty-four out of the forty tracks were identified. The theme I was looking for was Back to the Future, noirrosaleen offered The 50s Recovered which was a very, very good alternative. There were a couple of tracks I was pleasantly surprised that people identified (Mr Sandman), and several I was surprised that no one did (Time Won't Let Me Go, Mercy, I Only Wanna Be With You).

The second Disc is Back to the Future. Each track hearkens back to the sound and sensibilities of the american teen 50s sound, but is slightly anachronistic, in a Set sort of way; covered by a modern artist, or performed by a 50s artist in an out-of-era style, or performed originally in the 70s or 80s in the style of the 50s. There are five tracks performed by the original artists, actually from the 50s, to seed the disc for flavor. If you were a time traveler and heard these on the jukebox in a streetcar diner, you should become awfully suspicious about what the year actually was.
