What's your philosophy on recording bass drums in orchestras? Record it naturally so that it sounds like what you would hear if you were in the audience in a nice hall? OR Mic it separately and push it up in the mix so that you can get some earth shattering kabooms?
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Louis Lane conducting.
Oh, that's hard - I'd want to record it naturally, because I'd want to listen to a performance that had amazing bass. That said, I'd be tempted to push the bass up in the mix if the recording didn't do the piece or the performance justice - at that point it's no longer purely a recording of a work of art, but a separate work unto itself, and on that basis it's a fine thing.
I was goign to ask about that. I just find it amusing that somewhere around 6 minutes, Keith apparently gets bored (in the live version that I have) and goes noodling off into the hinterlands with Greg and Carl following at breakneck speed.

Whenever I hear it, I think of the NY Museum of Natural History, cause they used it in their tv commercials when I was small, and it burned in.
